Gathered to Serve
Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Room In The Inn ministry. Each winter thousands of people share love and hospitality by providing shelter in their faith communities. These efforts result in a transformative experience for both guests and hosts as they meet around the supper table to fellowship, to dialogue, and to encourage each other. Room In The Inn is a chance to experience God in a new way through this interaction.
Gathered to Serve is an effort to reach out to congregational volunteers to provide training, support, and reflection for people who may not have a background in ministry or social services. In our experience, many volunteers have questions about homelessness or want to discuss ways of operating the program in their particular congregation or simply need to process some of their personal experiences that occurred while serving at Room In The Inn.
We offer Gathered to Serve sessions at our participating congregations for the convenience of the volunteers. We can plan these sessions to take place during religious education classes, on weeknights, or small group times. We seek to provide education and support in a way that fits the needs of each congregation.
In addition, we have created a course catalog for Gathered to Serve: a listing of available sessions that examine different aspects of the Room In The Inn ministry. The content of each session is developed by our staff members and professionals who consult with us at our downtown campus on a regular basis. Congregations can choose to bring us in for one session, a day-long workshop featuring several topics, or a series of programming in consecutive weeks. Session facilitators will be our staff members or professional volunteers using multi-media presentations with a high level of interaction among session attendees.
The goal of Gathered to Serve is to support and empower congregational volunteers so they can feel more comfortable and informed in their work at Room In The Inn. We wish to be of service to the people of your congregation who so freely offer themselves to this life-saving ministry
